What You'll Get To Do:

  • Patent Consulting Services for Startups
  • Evaluate candidates for and delivering patent consulting services for third-party companies/startups
  • Identify, evaluate, and assess potential innovations (invention harvesting)
  • Analyze patentability and marketability of innovations
  • Draft patent consulting materials
  • Provide general patent consulting support (feedback on patent applications, office actions responses, etc.)
  • Patent Litigation Support
  • Support counsel in handling client patent litigation matters
  • Perform patent analyses (infringement, validity) and conduct legal research
  • Review draft documents prepared by outside counsel and in-house staff
  • Licensing Authority Supervision
  • Act as a company representative in the licensing partnerships (LLCs) activities to monitor each entity’s management
  • Attend and participate in partnership meetings
  • Periodically report to company about partnership activities 

Other Tasks:

  • General IP Support
  • Advise in-house/outside clients regarding IP-related issues including new developments in patent laws and policies
  • Draft and review IP clauses in business contracts
  •  Team Development & Cooperation
  • Provide proper IP professional training to the team.
  • Independently identify tasks and services reasonably necessary to maintain good relationships with in-house clients.
  • Administrative


What You’ll Bring:

Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s or advanced degree in the Physical Sciences or Engineering
  • Registration with the USPTO
  • Patent prosecution practice in a law firm or corporate in-house IP department – about 5 years
  • Experience supporting non-prosecution patent matters (e.g., litigation, licensing, counseling) in a law firm or corporate in-house IP department – about 2 years
  • Startup knowledge/experience a plus
  • Native-level or fluent English speaking and writing skills
  • Japanese skill is a plus (Knowledge of Japanese as a second language or familiarity with Japanese business and culture)

Other Requirements:

  • Preference for local candidates in the Torrance, CA area
  • Ability to travel as job duty requires
  • Flexibility to operate efficiently in a large multinational organization where internal clients are located both in Japan and the U.S.
  • Ability to quickly understand Clients’ needs and to advise proper actions under each given circumstance if involved risk or transaction is significant, but independently as to routine matters
