More than a Month: Honoring Black History at Panasonic
More than a Month: Honoring Black History at Panasonic
3 minutesStories of achievement, perseverance, challenges, and triumph make American and Canadian Black history deeply rich and interesting for all. While Black History can be found in so many facets of everyday life no matter the month, we dedicate February to examining and reflecting upon the contributions of Black people to American and Canadian society.
At Panasonic, we are proud to honor and celebrate Black History by lifting up the voices of Black employees whose rich roots serve them in building a better future for all. February and beyond, across our organization, we are fortunate to be regularly inspired, moved, and motivated by our BLAAC (Black, Latino, African American, African, Caribbean) Employee Network (BEN). By hosting thought-provoking speakers, facilitating community outreach, and providing important networking sessions, Panasonic is a place where Black history and experiences are at work day in and day out.
“For me, Black History Month serves both as a reminder of our nation's complex history and a celebration of the past and present contributions of Black people. Most importantly, it calls into focus the continued work that we can all make in our world as we reimagine what possibilities lie ahead,” shared Justine Hunter, Sr. Marketing Specialist, Panasonic Connect and BEN Committee Leader. “I think this is what makes groups and organizations like Panasonic’s BLAAC Employee Network essential to continuing to create spaces that encourage us all to have open and honest conversations about the work that needs to be done in our communities and workplace.”
We invite you to learn more about what Black History Month means to our team members as they share their perspectives below.
“Black history month is an opportunity to celebrate the great men and women of African descent who have made significant and positive mark in the world by their invention, struggle and creativity. These great men and women by their impact and achievement have paved the way for others to emulate and have given everyone hope that they too can be whatever they wish to become or can achieve whatever they their set eyes on. As a Panasonic employee, I am proud of the diversity of the workforce and the opportunities provided for all succeed in their career.” – Michael Togbe, Sr. Human Resources Manager, Panasonic Energy of North America
"When I think of Black History, the first thing that comes to my mind is what MLK has accomplished for equality for all people, and what I love about Black History Month is how it provides the outlook of our overall history and displaying the voices of our culture for everyone to gain knowledge of the past." – Courtney George, Receptionist, HR & Facilities, Panasonic Automotive
“Black History Month gives me an immense sense of pride, as a person of color and a Panasonic employee, because the accomplishments of black people in America are given the spotlight.“ – Duane Hobson, Sr. Data Analyst, Panasonic Connect.
“Two of the common themes around the country during Black History Month are the importance of honoring those trailblazers who came before us and the importance of investing in the next generation of leaders. The same can be said for the activities and initiatives sponsored by BEN which will take place at Panasonic during the month of February. Whether we are in the community at a local pre-school bringing Black History to life with a read a long highlighting the achievements of black inventors or pausing internally for a workshop on Mentoring and Sponsorship, we will not only celebrate black history… we will help create black history right here at Panasonic.” – David Williams, Sr. Sales Manager, Panasonic Consumer Electronics Company
Our hope is that all our employees have a chance to celebrate and honor Black history this month and take the opportunity to learn and grow together.
