Maintains the packaging machinery in proper operating order through preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repair and improvement.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES \include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Operates machinery within Department assigned.

Performs preventative maintenance procedures on all machines in department assigned to include:

Periodically cleans and lubricates.

Tightens bolts.

Changes belts and chains.

Detects abnormalities.

Troubleshoots problems to include:

Confers with machine operators to determine nature of problems. Looks for defective materials going into the system. Examines the mechanical, pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical and electronic operation of the machinery.

Inspects external parts of the machines for jams, breakage, abnormal vibrations, etc.

Restores machines to correct operating functions:  Replaces broken or worn parts.

Uses basic hand tools, basic machine shop tools, measuring and inspection devices and power tools.

Reads blueprints.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

None, but does give instructions to machine operators within the department.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and two years work experience operating and repairing manufacturing machinery.  Two years of vocational training preferred.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other employees of the organization.  Good English skills, written and orally.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.  Knowledge of the metric system.

REASONING ABILITY

Ability to apply commonsense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving variables in standard and non-standard situations.

OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Able to read blueprints.  Understanding of basic troubleshooting steps.  General knowledge of pneumatic, hydraulic, electrical and electronic systems.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
