Facilities Maintenance and Operations Manager


Panasonic Energy of North America (PENA) is collaborating with Tesla Motors, Inc. in a large-scale advanced battery manufacturing facility known as the Gigafactory near Reno, Nevada which is known for its quality of life and expansive outdoor adventures. Panasonic manufactures and supplies cylindrical lithium-ion cells for the world’s leading electric vehicle manufacturer, Tesla Motors, Inc. Based on the battery demand from Tesla, the Gigafactory plans to produce cells which will double the world’s current production.
  
Our mission at PENA is to make the vision of affordable Electric Vehicles a reality by production of the world’s safest, highest-quality, and lowest-cost batteries.  Through this effort we will create a clean energy society and our products will change society’s use of and perceptions of electric power.

You will be an integral member of the Facilities Management team, a key player in ramp up and in sustaining our operational and maintenance activities. You will own management of assigned groups adding your leadership support to all facets of facilities, thus ensuring facilities goals are continually met.  You will also work closely with internal and external key stakeholders regarding technical support for activities and strive for best-in-class products and business practices. By providing clear leadership and vision, you should inspire, motivate, and mentor staff to achieve excellence, and to develop new skills, which is an integral aspect of growing our PENA team. Must be able to drive Key Performance Indicators across assigned Facilities areas and ensure all projects are delivered with the highest quality standards, while maintaining budgetary guidelines and strict deadlines.

Job Functions, Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Manage functional Facilities Maintenance & Operations teams to meet Facilities KPI’s.
  • Empower, develop, and reward individuals and teams for performance and growth.
  • Ensure that company resources are utilized to sustain safe manufacturing and distribution excellence.
  • Manage ongoing improvements in facilities efficiency, implementing Lean principles, and demonstrated proficiency in implementation.
  • Coordinate and interact with internal cross-functional teams to fulfill Customer and Company goals.
  • Drive strategy and direction for site Facilities Maintenance and Operations consistent with organizational guidelines and vision
  • Support the creating and delivery of operational objectives, facilities services, programs and contracts in the portfolio
  • Provide strategic direction to others who oversee Facilities Maintenance and Operations
  • Accountable for annual budget development and operations analysis for Facilities Maintenance and Operations
  • Assures capital projects, operations projects and reconfigurations are managed with outstanding customer service
  • Further develops standards and procedures as business and customer needs evolve
  • Partner with procurement on opportunities to RFP and/or negotiated service contracts
  • Drive and support special projects and strategic initiatives for the portfolio
  • Work with corporate legal counsel to manage contracts and day to day operations where applicable
  • Establishes trust and maintains open, positive relationships with team and customers
  • Conducts regular, formal site condition inspections and develops solutions for systemic needs
  • Collaborate with PENA leadership to ensure consistency, lessons learned, and best practices across the Gigafactory

Basic Qualifications:
  • BS in Engineering or Business or equivalent manufacturing management experience
  • 10+ years’ experience in real estate / facilities experience required – a significant portion of which should demonstrate success in managing complex facilities and rapid growth
  • Demonstrated experience as a leader with 3+ years of supervisory responsibilities
  • Experience building and supervising a team or department within a multicultural startup environment
  • Exceptional communication skills; ability to lead cross-functional teams through influence, advice, and modeled behavior versus micromanagement; excellent interpersonal skills; calm under pressure, able to de-escalate and effectively manage escalations at all levels of the company
  • A track record of championing speed, flexibility, and frugality in the face of rapid change and extremely heavy workload
  • Solid understanding of sourcing/procurement, building systems and maintenance, vendor management and customer service
  • Comfortable with legal terms and structures for standard commercial contracts
  • Strong ability to identify and solve ambiguous problems
  • Self-starter who sets aggressive goals and consistently gets results
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically and successfully execute tactics
  • Effective resource management and project management skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office.  Knowledge in using SAP and ARIBA is preferred.
  • Proficient in collecting, analyzing, and presenting data
  • Lean, 6 Sigma, 5S experience, and continuous process improvement experience

Physical Demands:

Walking, climbing stairs, lifting, pushing, pulling, sitting, writing, typing, crouching, kneeling, and standing. Minimum lifting of 50 pounds. Must wear a Hard Hat, Safety Glasses, Safety Vest, Steel Toe or Composite Toe Shoes or Boots.  Ability to walk or maneuver approximately 3 miles per day in the factory.  Willingness to work in a construction environment and wear appropriate PPE.  The employee must be able to follow safety requirements and procedure provided by the company and its agents.
