Job Summary:

Panasonic Energy of North America (PENA) is seeking ambitious engineers to lead the world’s largest lithium ion battery initiative. With superior battery designs and the fastest manufacturing lines in the world, Panasonic is producing millions of batteries per day at the Gigafactory to support Tesla’s electric vehicle and energy storage businesses. At PENA, engineers quickly become experts in the fundamentals of lithium-ion cell technology and work to integrate that understanding with high speed, automated manufacturing methods to produce the highest performance and highest quality lithium ion batteries. 

Essential Duties:

  • Being part of Panasonic’s electrode production process. The electrode group is responsible for the anode and cathode fabrication of Panasonic’s cylindrical lithium-ion batteries. This includes mixing, coating, drying, and pressing processes.
  • Working alone or with engineering team members to complete projects to both improve processes in existing production lines and install/commission new production capacity.
  • Providing engineering support to electrode as well as cell production teams to resolve manufacturing process issues.
  • Determining feasibility of designing new plant equipment or modifying existing facilities considering costs, available space, time limitations, company planning, and other technical and economic factors.
  • Providing technical information concerning manufacturing or processing techniques, materials, properties, and process advantages and limitations which affect long range plant and product engineering planning.
  • Preparing or directing preparation of product or system layout and detailed drawings and schematics.
  • Analyzing test data and reporting to determine if design meets functional and performance specifications.
  • Evaluating engineering test results for possible application to developments of systems or other uses.
  • Other duties may be assigned.

  • To ensure the health and safety in the workplace and for the protection of our employees, wearing PPE is a possibility and may include equipment such as a full Tyvek suit, safety shoes, gloves, safety glasses, face mask, bump cap, and a full hazmat suit that includes a respirator.

Qualifications:  Requirements - Required and/or Preferred

Education:

  • Basic:  Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.
  • Preferred:  Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field.

  • Experience working inter-departmentally (production, maintenance, etc.) in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Strong project management and collaboration skills.
  • Experience utilizing CAD software such as Solidworks.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to facilitate successful interactions with team members and management.
  • 2+ years of equipment engineering experience in a manufacturing/production environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working in lithium-ion battery manufacturing.
  • Experience with slot-die coating, slurry mixing, or slitting processes.
  • Ability to create and read P&IDs.
