The Facilities Director is responsible for building and leading a highly skilled team of Facility Engineers, Construction Engineers, and Facility Maintenance teams in a High-Performance Culture. This role leads the facilities efforts and is the partner to Panasonic’s operational leadership. Additionally, the role combines the Director’s leadership, business acumen, leadership development, employee relations, communications, and passion to extend an organization from a vibrant start-up workplace into a burgeoning lithium-ion battery cell operation.

The Facilities Director will be involved from the design stage of the factory and will help oversee the construction, installation, and commissioning of the utility equipment. The Facility Director will be responsible for building a strong team of employees that will ultimately be responsible for the day-to-day steady operations of the utility infrastructure.

Essential Duties:

  • Collaborate with multiple stakeholders on utility infrastructure design, construction, and commissioning.
  • Build and lead a cross functional team that will be the SME’s (subject matter experts) of the utility infrastructure.
  • Lead facilities initiatives, engineering, construction, maintenance, operations, aligned to the key operational groups within Panasonic’s battery factory in Kansas to achieve business objectives
  • Propel the organization with clear, prioritized initiatives, with outstanding project management coupled with rapid and thorough deployment
  • Extend the effectiveness of the Facilities Level of Service
  • Elevate the capability of the Facilities Engineering & Construction team by project expansions, the entire Facilities function through goals & objectives, training, regular feedback, staffing excellence and external perspective
  • Shape and champion PENA culture throughout the organization through personal example, clear communication and consistency in policy adherence
  • Develop leaders in the organization with excellent coaching and partnership
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer from global to local teams as part of production expansion plans
  • Ensure compliance with external regulations and internal policies
  • Manage ongoing improvements in facilities efficiency, implementing Lean Principles, and demonstrate proficiency with implementation
  • Coordinate and interact with internal cross-functional teams to fulfill customer and company goals
  • Drive strategy and direction for Facilities department consistent with organizational guidelines and vision
  • Work with corporate legal counsel to manage contracts and day to day operations where applicable
  • Establishes trust and maintains open, positive relationships with team and customers
  • Collaborate with Panasonic leadership to ensure consistency, lessons learned, and best practices across the Gigafactory
  • Prepare contingency plans and emergency operational support in coordination with risk management planning
  • Develop and execute to annual capex and opex budgets

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements:

  • To ensure the health and safety in the workplace and for the protection of our employees’, wearing PPE is a possibility and may include equipment such as a full Tyvek suit, safety shoes, gloves, safety glasses, face mask, bump cap, and a full hazmat suit that includes a respirator.

Qualifications:  Requirements - Required and/or Preferred


  • Basic/Required:  Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering, or related field
  • Preferred:  Professional Engineering License (PE), Master’s Degree in Business (MBA), Certified Facility Manager (CFM)

Essential Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a real estate or facilities capacity, including having led teams
  • Manufacturing or related facilities management experience, preferably in an advanced manufacturing or high-volume manufacturing environment
  • Familiar with facility & OSHA regulations
  • Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 15+ years facilities leadership experience, with a majority in a manufacturing environment, preferably in both union and non-union environments, and 24/7 operations
  • Experience in a large multi-national company
  • Proven abilities to lead a variety of initiatives across the Facilities spectrum – Engineering, construction, maintenance, operations, communications, policy, employee/labor relations, and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Adept at seeking and integrating data analysis into influence for robust outcomes
  • High Performance Leadership - Genuineness of character. Servant Leader. Humility and high self-confidence to listen without ego, and advocacy for the important things.  Positive energy
  • Demonstrated comfort in multi-national environments
  • Superb written and spoken communication, including executive-level presentations – but genuine above all. This role is a critical leadership role, with communications affecting a large organization

Panasonic's role at the Gigafactory is to manufacture and supply cylindrical lithium-ion cells to Tesla for their electric vehicles and energy storage systems.
