Since its founding, giving back has been integrally woven into Panasonic’s DNA. As a reflection of this commitment, for more than 30 years, employees have had access to dedicated, paid volunteer hours, opening the door for them to champion the causes that inspire them most. In this story, we explore the history of this long-standing benefit and its impact today, told through the perspectives of devoted volunteers who put every hour to use and a leader ensuring the policy’s continued success. From neighborhood cleanups to animal shelters, their stories reveal how a flexible, people-first approach to service continues to fuel a culture of purpose.
A Culture Built on Contribution
Panasonic’s 35-hour paid volunteer time off benefit is deeply rooted in the vision of our founder, Konosuke Matsushita, who believed that a company’s mission is to contribute to society. “This benefit reflects our commitment to that principle and empowers employees to actively support causes they care about, whether through organized company initiatives or their own community involvement,” shares Alejandra Ceja, Executive Director of the Panasonic Foundation and Vice President of the Office of Social Impact and Inclusion.
What makes the program stand out, is the personal freedom it gives each employee. “Whether someone chooses to volunteer with a local nonprofit, school or civic organization, they can take the time, without financial sacrifice, to engage in service that reflects their values. It’s a tangible way Panasonic backs its words with action,” Ceja says.
