Continuing the Mission: Finding Purpose at Panasonic

Veterans Day is a time to honor the courage, commitment and sacrifice of those who have served in the military. At Panasonic, we go beyond recognition. We want our veterans to thrive in their post-military careers by providing meaningful opportunities, supportive programs and a culture that values their unique strengths.

For Tom Pruter, a former Master Chief Petty Officer in the U.S. Navy, the transition from military to civilian life was both challenging and transformative. After 25 years as a military police officer, Pruter faced the daunting task of redefining his career path.

“The most challenging part of transitioning from the Navy was being able to convert what I had done for the last 25 years into a follow-on career that was not even close to the one I had been doing,” Pruter shares. “To overcome this, I really employed all the tools in my tool bag and asked for help from my network of friends, co-workers and organizations like the COMMIT Foundation.”

A Shared Commitment to Excellence

Pruter’s journey led him to Panasonic Connect, where he found a company, whose values aligned closely with those he carried from his military service.

“The U.S. Navy is anchored in three core values: Honor, Courage and Commitment,” Pruter explains. “I see a strong connection between these values and Panasonic’s Seven Principles. Contribution to Society and Fairness and Honesty reflect Honor. Cooperation and Team Spirit, along with an Untiring Effort for Improvement, take Courage. Courtesy and Humility, Adaptability and Gratitude all require Commitment, to yourself and to the Panasonic team,” he says.

Panasonic Connect’s “Rising Star” program played a pivotal role in helping Pruter navigate his new career path. The initiative allows veterans and new employees to explore different business departments, ensuring they find a role that aligns with their skills and aspirations.

“It’s programs like this that support those transitioning to something new,” Pruter says. “What stands out most is the company’s commitment to honoring veterans through a culture that genuinely values our contributions and empowers us to thrive.”

From Military Expertise to Everyday Impact

The skills Pruter developed in the military like leading teams, adapting to change, staying disciplined and thinking strategically have been a real asset in his career at Panasonic Connect.

“In the Navy, I learned how to make decisions quickly, communicate clearly and stay mission-focused even in high-stakes environments,” he reflects. “That mindset has translated well into the fast-paced innovation driven culture at Panasonic.”

Mission Complete
Perhaps most importantly, Pruter found a sense of belonging.
“To me, belonging means being part of a team where your experiences, values and voice are not only respected, but truly valued,” he says. “Panasonic doesn’t just talk about inclusion; it lives it. Whether it’s through mentorship, leadership opportunities or simply being heard in meetings, I’ve felt empowered to grow and contribute.”
